@ 08:27 AM (14 months, 15 days ago)

The Republican party gave George W. Bush the keys to our country .. and he took it out for a hair-raising spin and wrapped it around a tree.

9 U.S. troops killed. Roadside bombs, combat operations claim more U.S., Iraqi lives; death toll for Americans in first four months of 2007 rises to 343.

From http://www.newsday.com:
BAGHDAD - The death toll for American forces and Iraqi civilians rose inexorably yesterday as U.S. military authorities announced the deaths of nine soldiers and Marines and a car bomb ripped through crowds of worshipers in the Shia shrine city of Karbala, killing at least 60 people.

U.S. deaths have surged in April, contributing to a grim statistic: So far this year, 343 soldiers have been killed - 53 percent more than the 224 killed in the first four months of last year, according to the Web site icasualties.org." [..]

As President Bush continues to dig in on staying the course in Iraq -- so he can pass the mess on to the next president -- our troops keep dying. I just heard on the news that 4 more soldiers are dead. Does that make 13 the last few days?

This train-wreck is gathering speed.

At least 103 American troops have died during April, making it the deadliest month of 2007 and the sixth deadliest month of the entire war.

I thought Bush said "as Iraqis stand up, we will stand down" .. a more accurate statement would've been "as we wait for the Iraqis to stand up, we will continue to be shot down."

The Iraqis are NOT standing up -- in fact their parliament said it was going to take a two-month vacation!

Here our soldiers are, losing their lives and shedding their blood to help a country .. not to mention having their tours extended to 15 months with no vacation .. but the Iraqi politicians are going to take 2 months off.

Standing up, my eye!

And this from http://www.realcities.com:
" Military planners have abandoned the idea that standing up Iraqi troops will enable American soldiers to start coming home soon . . . Pentagon officials said they know of no new training resources that have been included in U.S. plans to dispatch 28,000 additional troops to Iraq . . . In nearly every area where Iraqi forces were given control, the security situation rapidly deteriorated. The exceptions were areas dominated largely by one sect and policed by members of that sect."

What this means is that we will not be standing down. American soldiers will be doing the majority of the fighting and dying while we wait for the Iraqis to do something.

I saw a State Department report that said the number of terrorist incidents in the world were up about 30% in 2006.

And I read about the Saudis being really unhappy that the detainees coming out of Gitmo are even more extreme than when they went in. So much so that the Saudis are giving them counseling, financial aid and even match-making in order to woo them away from their attachment to terrorism.

Thus is Bush's legacy -- creating more terrorists who hate America. About 95% of the Middle East is angry with the US .. which is exactly what Osama bin Laden hoped would happen.

"President Bush sent out an e-mail today asking people to send money to the Republican Party. How come those e-mails never get deleted?" --Jay Leno

"Yahoo announced they're going to host the first ever online presidential debate. Why Yahoo? Why not on a eBay? Candidates end up going to the highest bidder anyway" --Jay Leno

"New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is busy. He says he wants to copy an anti-poverty program that is currently used in Mexico. Apparently, Mexico has a great anti-poverty program. It's called 'a bus ticket to Los Angeles.'" --Conan O'Brien

"Rosie O'Donnell announced that her reign of terror is over. ... Rosie joined 'The View' in September of last year. She will leave on June 13th. ... Congratulations, Rosie. In nine short months, you transformed morning television from a peaceful land of movie plugs and menopause chat to a violent, sadistic battlefield littered with clumps of Donald Trump's hair, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and piles and piles of Krispy Kreme donuts" --Jimmy Kimmel

"I got myself a new computer this week. I got the Alberto Gonzales Dell computer. Have you seen this one? It destroys your e-mails and has no memory." --Jay Leno

"Almost everybody in Washington is still calling for Gonzales to resign. President Bush said Gonzales' testimony last week increased his confidence in him. Bush said he had no idea Gonzales could lie like that." --Jay Leno

"Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney. Do you know what would happen if Cheney was impeached? George Bush would become acting president." --Jay Leno

"In a speech in New York City, Hillary Clinton said when she gets to the White House in 2009 ... she's afraid to see what's she going to find underneath the rug in the Oval Office. You know, I don't think the Clintons are the best people to talk about the rug in the Oval Office." --Jay Leno

"The former president of Russia, Boris 'buy me a drink' Yeltsin, has passed away. He left behind a bar tab of $3.2 billion." --Jay Leno

"There was a prison riot in Indianapolis .. over 35 former congressmen were involved." --Jay Leno

"Are you folks excited about the 2008 presidential campaign? ... Hillary Clinton says that if she's elected, she will name her husband Bill Clinton a roving ambassador to the world. ... Hmmm. Let me think about this. Bill Clinton traveling around the world without his wife? No, I can't see anything going wrong there." --David Letterman

"Some other world class entertainers gathered this weekend for a good cause at the White House Press Correspondents' Dinner. This is where politicians cut loose and make fun of each other and themselves. Last year Stephen Colbert was the headliner, but he was a little bit too funny for their liking I guess, because this year, they went a slightly safer route. They exhumed Rich Little to be the MC. ... Now, when we finally need Dick Cheney to shoot an old man, he's nowhere to be found." --Jimmy Kimmel

"Sheryl Crow was at the dinner to raise awareness of global warming, and she has an interesting plan. Sheryl Crow is encouraging people to only use one square of toilet paper when they go to the bathroom. ... So in other words, don't ever shake Sheryl Crow's hand" --Jimmy Kimmel

"President Bush is standing by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Bush says Gonzales is an honorable man. You know what that means? George is drinking again" --David Letterman

"Sanjaya has quite a weekend ahead of him. He's going to the White House Correspondents' dinner on Saturday night, which means there's a really good chance he will meet President Bush. It's crazy to think that a guy who did not get the most votes, who's not good at what he does, is famous despite the fact that he is consistently horrible, would get the chance to go to the White House and meet Sanjaya." --Jimmy Kimmel

"In the wake of his disastrous performance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales maintains that he still won't resign.... During the hearings, he said 'I don't remember' or ' I don't recall' over 50 times.... Even the most conservative senators think he should resign. Sam Brownback thinks he should resign, and he's so conservative, he thinks watching 'Will and Grace' gives you AIDS" --Seth Meyers

"Really, President Bush? You think [the Gonzales testimony] went well? Which part? Because the best thing anyone can say about Gonzales' testimony was that he didn't use the word 'nappy,' and he remembered to wear pants." --Amy Poehler

"Over in Washington, Alberto Gonzales testified yesterday before Congress. He is the Sanjaya of the Bush administration. He had a month to rehearse and he still sucked." --Bill Maher

"He said some version of 'I don't remember' 71 times. I know it's 4/20, but even I'm not that big of a pothead." --Bill Maher

"NBC is taking a lot of heat these days, because they aired the videos of this crazed killer. The president of NBC says they debated whether they should air this material for hours, and they were finally persuaded to come down on the side of making a s**tload of money. ... If we only knew there was this big an appetite for raving lunatics, we would have never canceled Imus." --Bill Maher

"Also taking some heat today is Harry Reid, the Democrat leader in the Senate. He apparently told President Bush Iraq is lost. And Bush said, 'Maybe it's with Karl Rove's e-mails.'" --Bill Maher

"Sanjaya was voted off 'American Idol.' ... Experts say that America wasn't going to vote for a guy who spends that much time on his hair ... which is more really bad news for John Edwards." --Jay Leno

"A new study says that heart disease is related to erectile dysfunction. No wonder Dick Cheney's been so grumpy all the time." --Jay Leno

"On Capitol Hill, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales raised his right hand, swore to tell the truth, and then had a good laugh. ... He testified that he had nothing to hide. Well, not anymore ... he deleted everything." --Jay Leno

"After weeks of mock testimony, there you have it. Alberto Gonzales doesn't know what happened, but he assures you, what he doesn't remember was handled properly." --Jon Stewart

"Gonzales used the phrase 'I don't recall' 45 times before lunch. I should point out ... that's a lot. ... What could make a guy forget such a big decision that happened so recently? [on screen: Gonzales saying, 'I went back and looked at my calendar for that week. I traveled to Mexico for the inauguration of the new president. We had National Meth Awareness Day']. Now we know!  --Jon Stewart

Chickens, meet roost

@ 07:12 AM (14 months, 19 days ago)

Subpoenas! I used to be just a political junkie .. but now I'm turning into an investigation junkie.

From the Washington Post:
"Lawmakers approved new subpoenas yesterday for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other Bush administration officials, part of an expanding legal battle between the Democratic-controlled Congress and the administration over issues such as the firings of eight U.S. attorneys and flawed justifications for the war in Iraq."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/26/AR2007042600445.html

Subpoenas! All over the place! On the list -- White House aides, Justice Department officials, political appointees, Pentagon bigwigs...you name it, there's a Congressional committee that wants to ask them questions.

Karl Rove deputy Sara Taylor got a subpoena. Be still my heart ...

I see that the Judiciary Committee voted to grant immunity to Monica "Fifth Amendment" Goodling so that she can testify under oath about "Purgegate." Even a majority of the Republicans on the committee voted in favor. Excellent .. it's time to get her under oath.

Poor crybaby Righties are screaming "partisan witch hunt!" How quickly they forget!

During the Clinton administration there were 1,052 subpoenas issued .. for everything under the sun, from hearings on Clinton's Christmas card list to Whitewater to did he kill Vince Foster? .. did Hillary kill Vince Foster? .. so many silly things. But his biggest crime was lying about unzipping his pants. 1,052 subpoenas issued.

Okay .. now fast forward to the Bush administration, who lied us into the biggest blunder in our history, the Iraq war .. which drains our blood (3335 dead at last count, 23,000 wounded) and treasure ($6 billion a month, borrowed from future generations). The Bush administration who is breaking our military through overuse and over-deployment. Whose rich friends are filling their pockets -- 126,000 independent contractors in Iraq, with no oversight.

The list of scandals that breed in the Bush White House is just too long .. I didn't even get to the human rights and privacy violations. Anyway -- how many subpoenas do you think have been issued during the Bush administration?

That would be FIVE. Five subpoenas do not a witch hunt make.

I hope Congress starts issuing subpoenas like DUI's in Dallas on a Saturday night.

The GOP thinks yelling "partisan witch hunt!" distracts from their need to answer for the seriousness of certain charges .. or the violations of whatever laws are at stake. They just dismiss it all as being motivated by those irrational Bush-haters.

How many times do I have to say that I do not hate Bush? I just think he is incompetent and the worst president we ever had. He is destroying my country!

What Bush and his puppeteers have tried to do is RULE .. and you only need one party to rule.

When Republicans had control of Congress those six years, they completely shut out the Democrats from the entire legislative process .. there were no efforts at compromise .. nothing.

And we're not hunting for witches, we're hunting for crooked officials who break the law. Crooked officials are real!

Actually, it's not really much of a *hunt* .. not much sport at all .. more like shooting fish in a barrel here lately. Every week seems to bring a fresh barrel.

See, they needed heros to sell the war

@ 07:09 AM (14 months, 20 days ago)

Ranger Ordered to Hide Truth from Tillman's Parents
"An Army Ranger who was with former NFL start Pat Tillman when he died by friendly fire in Afghanistan testified Tuesday that he was told by a higher-up to conceal that information from Tillman's family. "I was ordered not to tell them," Army Specialist Bryan O'Neal told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18287244/

Who was it who said the first casualty of war is truth?

Boy, the one thing this Administration does get right is their marketing ability. The phrase, "they could sell a pump shotgun to a one-armed man" comes to mind. Anything that happens in this world is fair game for them to spin.

But then they do get caught, don't they?

The Tillman story told on the Hill is about a soldier being ordered to flat out lie in an attempt to cover up the friendly fire killing of another soldier, and turn the victim into a martyr for the Global War on Terror.

You can see why they were tempted. Tillman’s enlistment was the stuff that Hollywood is made of .. young, strong, handsome, had everything going for him .. turned down football fame and fortune to defend his country. His death in valiant combat is the stuff of enlistment posters.

Then we learn how his body was stripped and his uniform was burned .. and lies were told to his grieving family. Apparently the White House knew the truth and decided to go ahead and milk the story for PR purposes on two TV shows -- the correspondents' dinner on May 1, 2004, and a memorial service for Tillman two days later.

Then there's 'Saving Private Lynch.' Wait, you mean Jessica Lynch didn't wipe out an Iraqi armored brigade before she passed out? The military didn't lie about that too, did they?

I have to laugh when I remember how my Rightie friends swallowed the Lynch story hook, line and sinker .. and then put me down when I questioned certain things that didn't ring true and said it looked to be "designed for TV." Mainly because of how quickly the American flag was placed in her hand .. looked like they were carrying props.

Turns out I was right -- her "daring rescue" from compassionate Iraqi doctors and nurses was nothing but an abrupt hospital discharge with guns and a camcorder.

What’s shocking is how lying about both episodes came so easily to military officials  .. and went so far. Tillman posthumously received a Silver Star based on a fabricated story of his death, and Lynch’s rescue in Iraq was turned into a quickie TV movie.

NEWSWEEK: Why did you decide to testify?
Jessica Lynch: Mainly it was about me just getting out the truth. I’ve spent the past four years trying to tell everybody the real truth, and not the stories they put together. They were false, ya know?

What was the greatest misinformation about you?
The whole Rambo story, that I went down fighting. It just wasn’t the truth.

So what really happened?
I didn’t even get a shot off. My weapon had jammed. And I didn’t even get to fire. A rocket-propelled grenade hit the back of our [Humvee], which made Lori [Piestewa], my friend, lose control of the vehicle, and we slammed into the back of another truck in our unit.

Who is to blame for spreading the misinformation?
Well, I think really the military and the media. The military, for not setting the record straight and the media for spreading it, and not seeking the true facts...

...The bottom line is the American people are capable of determining their own ideals of heroes and they don’t need to be told elaborate tales. [..]

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18297391/site/newsweek

That's right Jessica, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan certainly produce plenty of real heroes .. every day. The military did a disservice to all of its warriors when it inflated and rewrote the facts just to glorify the war.

If this war were so necessary to our national security as the Bushies would have us think -- why does it have to be pitched to us with disinformation .. flat out lies?

So, Bush White House and Pentagon, when next you tell us how well things are going in Iraq .. and we remember all your lies and deceit .. don't be too surprised when we sneer and say 'yeah right.'

Flags at half-staff for VA Tech, why not for our war dead?

@ 08:07 AM (14 months, 20 days ago)

Last week President Bush ordered all US flags at federal locations be flown at half-staff for a week to honor 32 people killed at Virginia Tech.

Why doesn't our government honor our fallen Soldiers and Marines the same way they honored the slain students?

Our nation mourned the loss of those VT students, and as precious as their lives were, are they considered more precious than those of our fallen troops, who gave their lives for our country? Many of whom are no older than the students ..

Like the 10 we lost over the weekend .. most were paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division. Nine paratroopers died and 20 others were injured when suicide bombers blew up a large dump truck near a patrol base. Their deadliest day of combat since 12 paratroopers were ambushed and killed in Vietnam.

It seems that troop deaths are only statistics, a blip on the TV screen .. a one minute mention. Their deaths are just as violent and heartbreaking as those of the university students .. but they barely get a mention in the media, who instead run with the shock factor of "the Virginia massacre.”

If not at the Post Office, Federal buildings or our front yards, at least flags should fly at half-staff at the fallen soldier's home base. Some states do this, but not all of them. Some states order the flags at all State Facilities to be flown at half-staff every time a soldier on deployment is killed with ties to that state.

Certainly a better way to honor our military than just slapping "support our troops" stickers on our cars.

If flags could be lowered for just one day after the death of a soldier .. but .. then maybe Bush doesn't want us constantly reminded of how many of our kids are dying.

The same Bush and Pentagon who ordered that no troop coffins can be photographed when returning home. The same Pentagon who lied about the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch incidents ...

But don't get me started ...

Walter Reed let him hang there for 2 days

@ 06:31 AM (14 months, 22 days ago)

This Bob Woodruff piece on ABC news last night shows why the GAO (Government Accountability Office) needs to act quickly on the request made by a bipartisan Senate group asking for an in-depth evaluation of the mental health services our returning troops are getting .. or NOT getting.

From ABC World News, Monday, April 23, 2007:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQrWY9Rs1Ew

Republican Senator Kit Bond:
“Combat stress and its impact on our soldiers and their families is a serious problem that continues to grow. Reports that our military is unprepared or unwilling to deal with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome or other mental health problems are unacceptable. Being unprepared for these problems is no excuse for inaction. It is our duty to take care of the brave men and women who have answered the call to duty."

Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill:
“Our men and women returning from war should receive mental health care equal to the physical medical care they are given, and anything less is unacceptable. It took this country 15 years after Vietnam to look at the mental health needs of veterans. We can’t do that to another generation of soldiers.”

I'm thankful to all the senators of both parties who are requesting the GAO review of mental health services .. it's about time we rectify the shameful abuse, neglect and mistreatment of our veterans by the Department of Defense.

"Remember the Rug"

@ 06:44 AM (14 months, 23 days ago)

President Bush muses on marriage, chicken-plucking and rugs ...

Bush went to Tipp City, Ohio last week to talk about terrorism .. but he ended up rambling on about marriage and chicken-plucking plants, the agony of death and his Oval Office rug, which resembles a sunburst.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070419/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_musings

When he talked about his hope for succeeding in Iraq, Bush said, "Remember the rug?"

What's up with the Republicans? You have Bush rambling like he's on something .. and McCain changing the Beach Boys hit "Barbara Ann" to "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran" during a speech in South Carolina (stick a fork in 'im).

I don't know if "Remember the Rug" will be the new national catchphrase .. "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember 9-11" were soul-stirring .. but now, Remember the Rug?

It also looks like the president is running out of friendly places to give speeches. He's been reduced to audience-selected town hall meetings like the one in Tipp City. And military bases .. because it’s practically a foregone conclusion that men and women in uniform are going to give their CIC a boisterous response .. especially when he’s trying to motivate them with encouraging words about their mission ..

.. well no, that didn't happen when he spoke at Ft. Irwin, CA a week or so ago, dozens of camouflage-wearing troops sat quietly at their lunch tables, some joined by family members, and they didn't look like happy campers. The applause was .. well, underwhelming.

Maybe they felt awkward being used as patriotic props .. there IS that Department of Defense directive that forbids service members in uniform to attend “partisan political events.”

Yes, partisan .. Bush does complain about Democrats to them, how they're trying to impose a pullout deadline. I can't imagine that there are no Democrats in the military .. that there were no Democrats in that lunchroom quietly thinking, "Go Democrats!"

Remember the 2006 Military Times poll? Barely one-third of service members approve of the way the president is handling the war.

http://www.militarycity.com/polls/2006_main.php

Maybe the troops were subdued because they are tired of the backdoor draft and extended tours in Iraq .. or going back for a third, and even forth, tour of duty.

Or maybe because this administration actively tries -- and often succeeds -- to cut Health Care benefits for active and retired military, cut Family Housing for the military .. education for the children of the military .. and so on and so on ...

It wasn't only at Ft. Irwin that they were subdued with their applause .. just a couple of months ago the president appeared at Ft. Benning, GA looking for a "friendly audience and a patriotic backdrop" to help sell his escalation policy. He didn’t get the reception he expected.

The far-right Washington Times even said the troops’ response to the president was “tepid.”

"FORT BENNING, Ga. -- President Bush sought a friendly audience and a patriotic backdrop yesterday to continue to make his case for sending 21,000 more troops to Iraq, but he received only tepid applause at this Army base, where the commanding general forbade soldiers from talking to reporters."

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20070112-120719-1724r.htm

The president’s support is down to about 30% .. I get the sense that a lot of the troops and their families are with the other 70%.

The true weight of this miserable war is entirely on their shoulders .. and on their families. The rest of us aren't sacrificing one dang bit.

Here's another clue:
Untrained ‘Surge’ soldier dies in Iraq

“One of the soldiers died just hours after arriving in Iraq — and was one of those troops rushed to the country in the “surge” who did not receive full training.”

… “some Iraq veterans in the 1st Brigade have expressed concerns about their younger counterparts missing the mission rehearsal. ‘The training was good but some guys came in after that. They’re basically going straight from basic training into Iraq,’ said Staff Sgt. Jason Massey last month, before saying goodbye to his family for a third combat tour.”

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003567503

This must stop!

What makes this double disgusting is the fact that the Decider is stomping around insisting that it’s the Democrats who will leave the soldiers untrained and ill-equipped .. blah blah blah ...

"President Bush picked [Iraq war architect Paul] Wolfowitz to head the World Bank in 2005. His mission? Use its mighty financial resources to raise the living standards of people around the world. "It was announced that Hooter's will open one of its restaurants in Israel this summer. So much for keeping the meat separate from the dairy" --Amy Poehler

"Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter has filed papers to run for president, but in his official filing, he misspelled the word 'president.' Political experts say it's all part of Hunter's plan to attract Bush supporters." --Conan O'Brien

"Turning now to our current president. Tuesday, he took his case for funding the Iraq troop surge to American Legion Post 177 ... and began with the airing of the platitudes [on screen: Bush saying, 'It matters what happens in distant lands.'] Of course, that seems obvious to many people ... but he just found that out." --Jon Stewart

The Cho video

@ 09:31 AM (14 months, 25 days ago)

Some people are upset that NBC and other news outlets have broadcast Virginia Tech killer Cho's video .. saying it causes so much pain to the loved ones of the victims .. and that it might even help promote copycat behavior.

I understand and sympathize with the distress of the families .. but the idea that this sort of thing should be withheld by a Big Brother Media disturbs me. I don't trust anyone to decide whether I'm grownup enough to see this kind of stuff.

The video has probably devastated Cho's parents just as much as the parents of the dead students. Everyone in this whole tragedy was a victim of one kind or another.

Individuals should make their own decisions about whether or not to look at it. We really don't want to start down the path of the media withholding genuine news just because some people might find it "disturbing" .. do we?

Some people think this is just the latest in political correctness .. that the video is a key part of helping us understand one of the biggest news stories of the year. If we're all going to discuss it endlessly -- and it looks like we are -- we ought to do it with as many facts as we can get.

Other people say Oh yeah? What are we going to understand? That he was crazy? That he was angry? Guess what, we figured that out from the fact that he killed 32 people.

Besides, I bet the same people who are yelling the loudest right now would be yelling even louder if investigators announced the existence of the video and pictures but then refused to allow anyone to see them. Right?

Sometimes the media confuse news and sensationalism.

Maybe the problem isn’t that NBC showed the video, but that they showed it over and over and over and over. The mainstream media today seem to be obsessed with taking 10 minutes worth of news and recycling it 100 times a day. They don't seem to be able to cover two stories simultaneously .. or even two different aspects of the same story.

I agree that we should be able to see the video .. but the repetitive 24 hours a day exploitation of it bothers me. There's a difference between disclosing it as news and running it relentlessly, shamelessly like some kind of snuff film.

Some complain that the video glorifies Cho, makes him some kind of perverse celebrity .. that running it constantly makes him larger than life. That can't be a good thing. That's what he wanted, after all, so it isn't even a sane thing. It might send a message to any psychopath with a gun and a video cam that if they do kill someone they can send NBC a video and become famous.

So .. no to censorship .. yes to moderation and treating it somberly as news, not entertainment sensationalism.

People want to watch this stuff, I don't care what they say ...

Another thing that disturbs me is that Cho was so obviously psychotic .. watching this very sick man rant is a bit too voyeuristic.

It's a crying shame he couldn't have just taken himself out and let all those people live.

And about it helping promote copycat behavior -- Cho did mention Kyle and Eric of Columbine. It's true that this stuff feeds on itself. Look at all the copycat news stories that sprang up yesterday after they aired the video .. several schools were shut down.

Then again .. what about the most famous televised snuff film of all time, the Zapruder film of JFK being shot? Wasn't that important enough to be seen by everyone? Did we have a spate of presidential assassins after it was aired?

Ah well .. the repetitive screening of Cho's video will soon fade. Maybe the protests against showing it is just displaced anger and frustration over the situation itself.

Righties wanted "Let's Roll" at VT

@ 07:13 AM (14 months, 27 days ago)

Well, it has started -- the same Righties who were calling the British naval hostages treasonous cowards are now calling the students of Virginia Tech wimpy cowards.

They say college classrooms are full of young men who are at their physical peak, and why didn't they do anything more than ducking, running, and holding doors shut.

They are saying that there are sheep and there are wolves .. and there were not enough wolves at Virginia Tech that morning. Just one old man who used his body as a shield.

They ask if the heroes of Flight 93 didn't teach us anything ...

If you bravely fight back you will all die anyway?

Why didn't those kids fight back? .. because if these brave Rightie Action Heroes had been in that situation they would have rushed the gunman, disarmed him, and subdued him .. just like in a Rambo movie ...

Yeah sure, rush a gunman firing a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol .. him in front of the classroom, kids in the back. Or the shooter in the doorway firing away, with no way for the students to attack him but charge for ten feet completely open to gunfire ...

And how do they know that none of the victims did, in fact, take a run at the shooter only to get their heads blown off?

Wait a minute .. you mean all you need to overcome a gunman are some brass ones? Does the NRA know this?

Now, I can’t imagine what it would be like to be sitting in a lecture hall and have someone walk in and suddenly start firing away .. people falling, screaming in pain, blood spurting everywhere. I imagine that I’d be mostly terrified and my survival instinct would kick in .. and I'd be looking for any possible exit strategy .. or play dead like the one girl did.

And I’d be alive, most likely.

VT's Ryan Clark was a hero .. the second victim of Cho Seung-Hui was killed in the dormitory trying to save the first victim.

People who have not been through something that horrific should just shut up and not criticize the actions of anyone who has .. maybe everyone should just talk as if the parents who lost their children are listening.

Next -- the Righties seriously advocate that kids in dorms should carry guns.

Yes, let's arm the biggest group of binge drinkers in American society. What could go wrong?

They drink until they fall over .. and break bottles over each other's heads and whack each other with lacrosse sticks and .. well, let's just say that dorms are a particularly bad place to keep guns around.

Sometimes when I listen to these Righties talk .. I have a better understanding of what Darwin was going on about all those years ago.

BTW--if these Big Brave Righties are so gung-ho, the Army sure needs them right now in Iraq. It has its hands full because the death squads have returned full force. 233 Iraqis killed in the last couple days, mostly in bombings.

32 dead kids is just a slow news day in Iraq.

Barney Fife works for the Secret Service

Tags:
@ 07:34 AM (14 months, 27 days ago)

What the hell? Surely the Secret Service weren't playing with their guns. Something doesn't sound right. And with highly trained SS agents? They just don't have accidents like this .. they know how to handle guns.

From AP:
WASHINGTON - Two Secret Service officers were injured in an accidental shooting Tuesday at the White House. The incident occurred in a security booth at the southwest gate.

Secret Service spokeswoman Kim Bruce said one officer was injured in the leg and the other received a shrapnel wound in his face. She said the injuries appeared to be non-life threatening and that both officers were taken to nearby George Washington University Hospital.[..]

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070417/ap_on_go_pr_wh/white_house_shooting_1

I'm guessing they got the jobs because they belonged to the Federalist Society and attended Bob Jones University .. SOP for this White House.

How did one SS agent end up with shrapnel in his face? Was the 2nd agent's face near the other's one leg? Unless the bullet was shot in the holster hitting the leg .. then bouncing off of the floor/ground .. then pieces of the bullet ricocheted off of the floor striking the other person in the face .. someone has some 'splaining to do about how someone's leg, gun and another man's face were all near each other in the normal course of standing guard at the White House gate.

Why don't they tell us what happened? Sounds bizarre. And somewhat clownish!

Maybe they were practicing quick draw like Barney on The Andy Griffith Show ..

Barney Fife -- "Gun-drawing practice, ten minutes every day. If I ever have to use this baby, I want to teach it to come to papa in a hurry."

They oughta put agent Jack Bauer in charge of guarding the President! On second thought .. every President he's been around seems to have died ...

Our nation weeps -- again

@ 09:56 AM (14 months, 28 days ago)

For the record -- I am a Democrat who respects the rights of gun ownership. I would do away with those rat-a-tat assualt rifles .. like the kind used by that killer in the CA fast food place a long time ago. He just walked in and mowed down over 20 people .. little kids and all.

Fox News Sunday gettin' tough on war 'happy talk'

@ 07:30 AM (14 months, 29 days ago)

Boy, it's a sad day for Conservatives when they get pinned to the mat on Fox News.

Here's Chris Wallace trying to get an answer from Sen. Lindsey Graham:

WALLACE: The New York Times reported this week — and let's put it up on the screen — in the first seven weeks of the surge, 116 U.S. soldiers were killed. That's actually up slightly from the 113 who were killed in the seven weeks preceding the surge.

And A.P. reports that the number of Iraqi civilians who have been killed over these seven weeks is down in Baghdad, but actually up dramatically in the rest of the country. And of course, we've just seen more carnage this weekend, bombings in Karbala and again just today in Baghdad.

So, Senator Graham, where is the progress?

GRAHAM: The progress is on political, economic and military fronts.[..]

[Then he rattles on about what he thinks is progress .. you can read the transcript here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266210,00.html]

WALLACE: I'm going to let Senator Levin respond in a moment, but I want to ask you one more question, because you said, Senator Graham, that one of the keys is political progress, and I think everyone agrees ultimately that this is going to have to be won by political reconciliation. But let's look at the record.

GRAHAM: Right.

WALLACE: For all of President Bush's talk in January about Iraqi benchmarks, the government there still has not passed oil revenue sharing, not allowed members of Saddam's Baathist party into the government and army, not scheduled local elections and not started amending the constitution.

I guess I have to ask you again, Senator Graham, where's the progress?

GRAHAM: There's a lot of progress on the oil front. The council of ministers have passed an oil agreement. It needs to be ratified by the parliament. Here's where Senator Levin and I...

WALLACE: But it's been sitting in the parliament for weeks, Senator.

GRAHAM: Well, the parliament got bombed yesterday. It's pretty hard to be a democracy when people are shooting at you.

WALLACE: Well, wait a minute. It was sitting there for weeks before the parliament got bombed, sir.

GRAHAM: My point is that it took us 13 years to write our Constitution. [rattle rattle .. parrots all the same Rightie talking points]

Well, knock me over with a feather Chris Wallace .. I'm looking at you with new eyes.

So .. it seems that people are getting tired of this constant yammering by Bush, Cheney and John McCain that the press hasn't shown enough painted school stories to even out the blood-shed and violence.

The truth is that since Bush's 'surge', more of our kids are getting killed, more Iraqis are getting killed .. the violence has reached inside the Green Zone and has spread to the outer areas around Baghdad.

April is turning into a bad nightmare for our troops .. the old whack-a-mole strategy is back .. you whack them down in one area, they regroup and pop up in another.

Our military does its best work when fighting conventional battles .. it is almost impossible for them to successfully chase down and contain loose-knit, scattered networks of insurgents.

Look at the blood we shed in '04 to control Fallujah -- 100 Marines KIA and over 1,000 wounded -- and today, guess what? .. the bad guys are back. Why did all those kids die and get their limbs blown off?

Maybe Bush and Cheney don't want to leave until they get them to sign off on the oil concessions. Some people think the oil agreement is downright theft .. and the real reason for this war ..

But back to Rightie 'happy talk' about the war. Republicans are going to have to face American voters in 2008 .. the same frustrated Americans who rose up in 2006 and voted to end this awful war.

And if you think they were mad then .. just you wait until '08.

How long will Conservatives continue to stick their heads into the sand? How long will they back this war? Which isn't really a war .. it's an occupation of a country that's having a Civil War. And our troops are sitting ducks in the middle of it.

I get tired of hearing, "Well, get ready for the consequences of pulling out .. more Iraqi bloodshed." Give me a break! The Sunni and Shia fanatical factions would fight each other whether we're there or not .. period. So don't try to PIN that tail on OUR Donkey!

I like Murtha's Plan -- a man who DID serve his country -- to redeploy our troops to designated areas and begin to draw down. We need more troops in Afghanistan.

Oh .. when we left Vietnam in a similar manner in 75, the Viet Cong did NOT follow us home.

The dog ate Rove's email

@ 07:40 AM (15 months, 23 hours ago)

Okay, is anybody shocked that the White House (Rove) used private email accounts so they could sidestep Federal laws requiring that all White House communications must be saved and not deleted?

And I'm certainly not surprised that Rove "lost" years of emails .. it's obvious that the WH is withholding evidence which it knows is damning.

"WASHINGTON, April 13 — Karl Rove, the chief political strategist for President Bush, did not intentionally delete e-mail messages to avoid creating a paper trail detailing his work, his lawyer said on Friday. Rather, he mistakenly thought that the messages were being preserved by the Republican National Committee.

....In addition to their government e-mail addresses, Mr. Rove and 21 other White House officials maintain e-mail accounts with the national committee that are supposed to be used for political business only." ....

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/14/washington/14emails.html?_r=1&ref=politics&oref=slogin

Back in 2004, as part of the Valerie Plame investigation, Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald put a hold on the WH deleting emails.

So they did. Except, it turns out, for Karl Rove's emails .. many of which are still missing. Now how peculiar is that?

We found out that Rove used his RNC account for 95 percent of his email. How much of this correspondence was supposed to be done -- by law -- in White House e-mail accounts?

He surely knows about the 1978 law that requires the White House to keep "documents that relate to presidential actions, decisions and deliberations" .. a law stemming from the Nixon/Watergate scandal.

Surely the White House didn't break the law and conduct government business on private e-mail accounts .. surely Rove didn't deliberately delete e-mails relating to the firing of those prosecutors .. or the outing of Valerie Plame ...

Hmm -- although the hold started in August 2004, the RNC does not have any e-mails prior to 2005 for Rove. So, there's only one logical explanation for the e-mails missing from his account -- Karl Rove personally deleted his e-mails from the RNC server.

Too bad Rove didn't remember Sandy Berger and print out all those emails, stuff them down his shorts, hide them under a construction trailer for awhile, then take them home and cut them up with scissors ...

Ah, but that stupid Sandy left the ORIGINALS in place .. the WH and RNC probably wouldn't be that dumb!

Wait a minute! .. I know what happened to Rove's emails!  They're just stuck in one of those "tubes" Sen. Ted Stevens spoke of when he was explaining the "internets" to us.

I-mess won't go way

@ 07:41 AM (15 months, 1 day ago)

The Imus scandal may have started with a disgusting racist remark, but it wasn't just a black and white argument .. it was also about women. But Righties are ignoring this issue and are trying to equate the Rutgers incident with the Duke lacrosse case.

Nope, you can't compare these female college athletes who were innocently living their lives when they were blind-sided by a barstool bigot, with a group of male college athletes who chose to throw a private party and hire a stripper, only to get suckered by her.

I have to say that I am glad the charges against the boys were dropped .. that they weren't sent to prison for something they didn't do. And DA Nifong should be investigated and disbarred if the charges against him prove true -- the latest being that he exploited a mentally unstable woman (stripper) for political gain.

But hey, when you combine a couple of strippers, some hormone-raging college boys, a lot of booze and who knows what else, inside a private house -- what could go wrong?

Thirty years from now these guys will be drinking beer and reminiscing on the wildest  house party ever. Tell me I’m wrong.

But .. getting back to criticizing attacks against race while ignoring attacks against women.

The hypocrisy is knee deep right now .. it extends to insults even Democrats make about Hillary Clinton. I don't care if you want her as the nominee or if you're working for Edwards or Obama .. if you think Imus was wrong, it's time you check your own language.

Even though Hillary Clinton is not my candidate, I get so sick of the attacks against her. It's a staple on Rightie radio and blogs .. this demeaning of the first viable female candidate for president. Slanderous attacks that call her a "money whore" or something equally derogatory .. some call her a lesbian .. all blame her for Bill's sleazy behavior. They rarely attack her policies, they always attack her womanhood.

Hillary Clinton and the Rutgers team may be of different races, but the issue is still the same. The denigration of women who are going for the brass ring, who are trying to be the best that they can be. Women who have to have incredible courage, strength and personal accomplishment .. while having to duck vile language that's meant to hold them down and make them 'less.'

And I cannot stand these phony male politicians and entertainers who profited from going on Imus' show to promote themselves and their books, but are now 'outraged' by his remarks. They've turned a blind eye to the sins of the I-man for decades.

I say 'male' because there were very few females ever on his show.

Ever notice that there are no 'nappy headed' hosts on any prime time news shows on MSNBC, FOX, CNN, ABC, CBS, or NBC?

Furthermore, there is very little color or gender diversity on the Sunday morning political talk show circuit, either .. where public and foreign policy issues are discussed and opinions shaped.

Gah, this is the 21st freaking CENTURY! Could we please -- at some point in time before we go EXTINCT -- evolve to the point where we can respect each other as just human beings?!

Late-night jokes 4/13

@ 05:43 AM (15 months, 3 days ago)

"The White House says it wants to appoint a high-powered official to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and issue directions to the Pentagon and the State Department. This person would be called 'the president of the United States.'" --Conan O'Brien

"Just days after her controversial trip to Syria, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she's considering taking another controversial trip -- this time to Iran. Even worse, when Pelosi gets back, she's going fishing with Don Imus."--Conan O'Brien

"It makes you realize what a helacious s**thole Indiana must be." -- Aasif Mandvi, on Rep. Mike Pence comparing the Baghdad marketplace to summertime in Indiana

"Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards, as well as a number of other Democratic candidates, say they the will not participate in a presidential debate next month, because the debate is on Fox News and Fox News is biased. How are you going to stand up to terrorists when you're afraid of Fox News?" --Jay Leno

"Earlier today, Senator John McCain moved to re-energize his presidential campaign with a speech to those for whom his politics are very personal -- the last uniformed Americans not deployed in Iraq, the cadets at the Virginia Military Institute. ... How committed is Senator McCain? [on screen: McCain saying, 'I would rather lose a campaign than a war.'] ... Luckily for Senator McCain, he might not have to choose." --Jon Stewart

"In a speech in Alabama, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said the one thing about him that you can count on is that we he makes a decision, he sticks with it. You don't believe him? You can ask either of his two ex-wives." --Jay Leno

"All of the major Democratic presidential candidates have now pulled out of a presidential debate sponsored by Fox News, because they feel Fox News is biased. Today, Fox denied the claim and said, 'Well, Republicans are going to win anyway.'" --Jay Leno

"Last week, presidential candidate Mitt Romney called himself a lifelong hunter. Turns out he's only hunted twice in his life. And, of course, both of those times were for Easter eggs. He said he hunts only small animals, like Jed Clampett did. Comparing himself to Jed Clampett? Is that a good idea? Anybody gonna want to vote for President Jed Clampett, especially after eight years of President Jethro?" --Jay Leno

"Do you believe the weather around the country? It was snowing in Washington. It was so white, people thought the Republicans were back in charge. It was so cold in Georgia that Newt Gingrich had another affair just so he could stay warm." --Jay Leno

"The Republicans issued a statement today demanding that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi get back to work. President Bush would have made the statement himself, but he's still on vacation." -Jay Leno

"A consumer watchdog group says there should be a box to check on your ballot if you want a dollar of your taxes to fight crime instead of going to presidential candidates. Which I think is a great idea. I mean, every time you take a buck away from a politician, you're fighting crime right there." -Jay Leno

"Down in Washington, D.C., is the big annual Easter egg hunt they have on the White House lawn. No surprise here -- the $187 billion egg coloring contract went to Halliburton. The kids are all running around hunting for the Easter eggs. And periodically, they'll pick up some of Cheney's shell casings. The kids did a tremendous job. The kids found hundreds and hundreds of eggs. And I'm thinking, 'Hell, lets let them look for bin Laden'." -David Letterman

"CBS News reports that despite the money Obama has raised, Hillary Clinton is not about to roll over. How many times has Bill heard that?" -Jay Leno

"A presidential candidate in France said his plan for birth control would be to encourage people to masturbate. Which explains why no one wants to go into the voting booth after he's done." -Conan O'Brien

"Nappy-headed ho's" is NOTHING

@ 07:00 AM (15 months, 4 days ago)

...compared to what is in today's rap music...and it's NOTHING compared to what hardcore racists say.

So .. MSNBC dropped its simulcast of the "Imus in the Morning" radio program.

We may not like it folks, but free speech has to swing both ways.

AND .. while we're dropping bigoted white guy radio shows, why give Limbaugh a free pass? He insults Barack Obama almost daily and once told a black caller to "take the bone out of your nose". Shouldn't we at least ask why Dick Cheney still appears on Limbaugh?

Yes, this light shining on Imus should also shine on the likes of Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh. Will they get dropped the next time they say something racist, sexist or  homophobic?

If we're going to clean up everyone's speech, what about when Coulter called John Edwards a faggot .. and called Arab people "ragheads"? She's been at it for years -- was all over the airways with her remark about whether to impeach or assassinate Clinton .. she also said something about poisoning a sitting Supreme Court Justice.

She was just joking you say? Well Imus says he was too.

Look, I'm not defending Imus or racism. On the contrary. EVERYONE should knock that kind of low-brow talk off .. it's mean, crude, annoying, debasing and stereotype reinforcing .. and should not be on our public airwaves.

But, one good thing about hate speech -- at least you know who's an asshole at heart and who is not.

And Al (Tawana Brawley) Sharpton and Jesse (Hymietown) Jackson ought to realize that people make mistakes .. that people can learn from these mistakes and move on.

So .. if our self-appointed word-sheriffs are really out to clean up Dodge, they should begin where the trash is deepest .. in their own community's rap culture, not NBC.

Yes, I have seen them on TV complaining about rap lyrics .. but they didn't convey what you'd call outrage.

Where's the outrage when black men degrade black women in songs heard thumping out of passing car windows and boom boxes on the street 24/7?

Disgusting lyrics like:

Back in the day, I use to like bitches
But I'll tell you now days, Bitches ain't shit
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wedesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Don't let no girl, no bitch, no faggy nigger get in my way.
(Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz - Album, Crunk Juice)

Or howz bout:

Write a little save-a-ho speech all these fake-ass hos...
Fake punk-ass bitches...
Do you know what i mean?
F*ckin'em up like this, man...
Short Dog's in the house, bitch!

Bitch, I'm buyin' you an ounce of this game
You better take it and shut the f*ck up
Stop runnin' your mouth like a sucka
Cause you's a punk bitch
(Too Short - Album, Short Dog's in the House)

Try singing that one to your sweetie some night and see how romantic she thinks you be.

I do not like double standards.

This whole Don Imus thing is incredibly overblown, and everyone involved should get over it .. concentrate on more important things. Karl Rove probably can't stop smiling since Imus shifted attention away from White House woes -- like Bush extending our troops tours of duty (a desperate stop-gap measure to save face as Iraq sinks deeper into an inescapable quagmire), the meltdown of Atty. Gen. Gonzales and all that icky US Attorney news, etc.

And guess what? .. people like Imus, Coulter, Limbaugh, etc. will never go away completely because the most important color in the world is not white or black, it's green.

If someone somewhere thinks Imus will generate an audience, he will get a new show. That simple.

Panic in the Daddy Party

Tags:
@ 05:40 AM (15 months, 5 days ago)

Can Republicans run fast enough to "escape the gravitational pull of the Bush administration”?

Excerpts from Maureen Dowd's April 11 New York Times column:
[..]
"The Daddy Party, sick with desire for a daddy, is like a lost child. John McCain, handcuffed to the Surge, announced yesterday he has the support of Henry Kissinger. Why not just drink poison? As the Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi slyly said, “Leave it to Mitt Romney to shoot himself in the foot with a gun he doesn’t own.”

Rudy Giuliani, already haunted by the specters of Bernard Kerik’s corruption and Judy Nathan’s conjugal confusion, yesterday made things worse. He did the same thing John McCain did in South Carolina in 2000, a sickening pander the Arizona senator told “60 Minutes” Sunday that he did “for all the wrong reasons.” As Marc Santora reports from Montgomery, Rudy said he would leave the decision about whether to fly the Confederate flag over the Alabama State Capitol to the people of Alabama.

Even cable news showed little interest in President Bush’s big speech on Iraq yesterday, as he continued to excoriate Democrats for hurting the troops by trying to get an exit strategy, a day after Moktada al-Sadr’s spokesman denounced the Liberator as “the father of evil, Bush” while Sadr thugs burned and shredded American flags and shouted, “Leave, leave occupier.”

Four years ago, the conservative commentator Kate O’Beirne thrilled at the sight of President Bush strutting in his flight suit and mocked Bill Clinton’s doughy thighs, noting, “Women don’t want a guy to feel their pain, they want a guy to clean the gutters.” But on “Meet the Press” Sunday, she sorrowfully admitted that Republicans had lost their national security swagger because of Iraq, and now have “a real brand name problem” and “a competency problem.”

“It used to be people thought they might not much like big government, but they can run it,” she said of her party’s leaders. “Now they seem to like it fine, but not be able to run it at all.” A point underscored by this week’s Time cover: “Why Our Army Is at the Breaking Point.”

As Adam Nagourney and John Broder report in today’s Times, Republican leaders are despondent and jittery as they watch their major candidates strain in sycophantic ways to prove their ideological credentials even as they see W.’s administration and war turning into an ever-tighter noose. Watching the Democrats’ fund-raising advantage with alarm and astonishment, they concede it will be tough to hold the White House.

Mr. Nagourney and Mr. Broder quote Mickey Edwards, a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma who now lectures at Princeton, saying that the party does not have any candidates who are compelling. “I just don’t know,” he adds, “how they can run hard enough or fast enough to escape the gravitational pull of the Bush administration.”

Don Imus and the reason Barrack Obama doesn't stand a chance

Tags:
@ 07:53 AM (15 months, 5 days ago)

Racism is woven into the fabric of our lives .. we just have to learn how to live with it and control it. It may be as human a trait as the survival instinct. From our earliest beginnings it may have been ingrained into all cavemen of one kind to stick together and be wary of those who look different .. of outsiders.

From newsday.com:
"Calling himself "a good person" who made a bad mistake, radio host Don Imus said Monday he would check his acid tongue after being lambasted for making racially charged comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team." [..]

It was who he said it about. He wasn't talking about some thong-clad hootchie mamas in a rap video .. he was talking about hard-working college girls, children whose parents were proud of their achievements. Using that kind of language to describe kids participating in a school function would be offensive in any racial context.

Don Imus has been saying stupid ridiculous racist things for years, and NOW people are finally paying attention? And it kinda makes you wonder what Imus says about black people when millions of people aren't listening.

Watch this and pay attention to what his cohort says ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF9BjB7Bzr0

Now I'm not defending Imus, what he said was outrageous and should bring consequences, but notice how his cohort kind of led him into it, saying "hardcore hos." Why is Imus the only one getting heat?

Why don't certain black comedians and hip hop rappers get the same heat? They use "nappy-headed" and "hos" to refer to themselves .. also "niggah." Why do they get away with it? Why do they still get bookings and music contracts? And I read that just as many whites buy rap music as blacks.

Maybe the best thing to come out of this dust-up is that a number of people in the black community are asking the question -- "how can Imus or any other white person be expected to say anything about blacks that's any different than the things blacks say to each other all the time?"

I don't listen to Imus for the same reasons I don't listen to Howard Stern -- shock jocks are not my thing -- and I never could understand why ANY politician would appear on Imus. Maybe because his demographic is mostly beleaguered 50 y/o white guys?

As usual, the media and bloggers are turning all this into a political thang .. saying if a Fox News commentator like Hannity or O'Reilly had made the same "nappy-headed hos" remark they would be crucified .. that since Imus "leans to the left" he will just get a slap on the wrist.

Leans to the left? Give me a break .. Imus is all over the map politically. Neither Democrat or Republican, he's just plain Contrarian. He takes the easy way out, saying "everyone is corrupt." That makes him right of center and left of Fox.

On the air he has called Gore "the most evil man in America" and referred to Hillary Clinton as "Satan" many times, once calling her "that buck-tooth witch, Satan."

He supported John Kerry .. supports McCain .. calls Dick Cheney a war criminal .. and called Newt Gingrich "fat" and a "disgrace." This is a man and show that spew nastiness toward everyone, Republican OR Democratic.

He regularly makes anti-gay slurs and called one reporter a "beanie-wearing little Jewboy" .. and called PBS journalist Gwen Ifil a "cleaning lady."

To be fair, I have to mention that Imus did a lot of ranting about the Feds ignoring the Katrina victims because they were poor and black. And he was pushing black Congressman Harold Ford's campaign for Senate as hard as he could .. AND blasting the "white lady" ads as racist.

Go figure.

As one who thinks that varying degrees of racism are buried deep within ALL of us, I think people who let it slip out -- Imus, Mel Gibson, Michael Richards -- ought to be allowed to apologize and keep their jobs. The public will make them pay the consequences .. or not.

Just because the words are erased doesn't mean the thought doesn't remain. And why we may not be evolved enough to elect a President Obama.

So MSNBC took Imus off the air for two weeks .. a slap on the wrist instead of a pink slip, because they want to see how this plays out. They'll surely want to capitalize on a boost in his ratings.

Everything is always about the money, honey ...

Let's face it, everyone dodged a war here

@ 06:54 AM (15 months, 7 days ago)

Bush Offered Blair Another War
"The U.S. offered to take military action on behalf of the 15 British sailors and marines held by Iran, including buzzing Iranian Revolutionary Guard positions with warplanes, the Guardian has learned."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,329771336-103681,00.html

Well, no wonder the Brits told Bush to butt out. I didn't know that Bush had offered to start a war .. on Britain's behalf of course of course .. so Bush could blame someone else when the Middle East blew sky high.

With him being guided by his heavenly voices and all .. he's the last bull you want in that China shop.

No one was probably more disappointed when the British sailors were set free than the neocon war hawks. Their followers -- far reich radio talk show hosts and bloggers -- were almost in tears when they heard the Brits were to be released and there would be NO nuking of Iran. Then they began calling the British sailors cowards, saying they dishonored their country and all the rest of that crap.

Bush and Cheney have lit a fire in Iraq that is about ready to explode the entire Middle East .. and it scares me to think that they're in office for two more years. Things are getting too tense .. I wish we had cooler heads taking care of this country.

And I don't care what the Washington Post says, I do believe Pelosi helped with her trip to Syria .. that her showing a cooler US head helped and certainly did not hurt.

"Another surprise intervention came from the Vatican. Hours before Wednesday's release, a letter from Pope Benedict was handed to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It said the Pope was confident that men of goodwill could find a solution. He asked the supreme leader to do what he could to ensure that the British sailors and marines were reunited with their families in time for Easter. It would, he said, be a significant religious gesture of goodwill from the Iranian people."

I didn't know the Pope had helped influence their release .. good for him. They *were* released in time for the most holy of Christian holidays ...

"The Iraqi government also played a critical role, pushing for consular access to five Iranians who had been arrested by US forces in Irbil and had been in custody since January, and helping organise the mysterious release of an Iranian diplomat who had been in captivity since February."

The US abduction of that diplomat is what probably started the whole mess in the first place.

This British account shows that instead of a lot of sinister goings-on behind the scenes, the real problem was the difficulty of just getting together all the people needed to make a decision in fragmented Iran.

It also points out that Ahmadinnerjacket is not even the most senior official in Iran .. that Ayatollah guy seems to have more clout.

"The British government also asked the US administration from Mr Bush down to be cautious in its use of rhetoric, which was relatively restrained throughout."

The English are so polite when they say "Shut the f**k up."

"Iranian President Mahmoud I'm-A-Nut-Job ... released those 15 British captives. ... He released them after they were held hostage for 13 days. Or, as we call it in this country, JetBlue." --Jay Leno

"Iran was worried that if they didn't act soon, then Nancy Pelosi would go over and talk to them too." --Jay Leno

"Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi went to Syria, and she said she found some common ground to talk about with the Syrians. I guess they told each other Bush jokes for a few hours." --Jay Leno

"Mitt Romney ... has been telling people he's a 'lifelong hunter,' but the truth is that he went hunting once when he was 15 years old and once last year, so by 'lifelong' he means he went twice. ... I think it's important to add, both of the times he went hunting, he shot an old man in the face ... so he's at least vice presidential material." --Conan O'Brien

"Romney ... was saying he is a 'lifelong hunter.' Turns out he's hunted exactly twice ... in his whole life. Dick Cheney has hunted lawyers more times!" --Jay Leno

"Giuliani said he wants to make it clear he is not in favor of gay marriage. He believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, no matter how many times it takes them to get it right" --Jay Leno

"Tom Tancredo has thrown his hat into the presidential ring ... after talking it over with his family. But even members of his own family were goin', 'Who are you again?'" --Jay Leno

"Congratulations to Hillary Clinton. ... She raised $26 million. Which is kind of risky, you know. If she ends up with too much money, she may have to run as a Republican." --Jay Leno

"Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani is lashing out at the press, asking the press to lay off his wife. The press responded today. They said, 'Okay. Which one?'" --Jay Leno

"Health officials are now warning that prescription sleeping pills can cause something called 'sleep driving.' It causes people to get up in the middle of the night, drive somewhere, and have no memory of where they went or what they did. To which Bill told Hillary, 'See!'" --Jay Leno

"Rudy Giuliani says the press can attack him all they want, but they should lay off his wife. Giuliani added, 'I just mean this wife. It's open season on the first two.'" --Conan O'Brien

"The big story in the presidential campaign is how much money Hillary Clinton has raised. It's a record. She raised $26 million in the first quarter, and then shifted $10 million she had leftover from her Senate race for a total of $36 million. Hillary Clinton has so much money ... John Kerry is now hitting on her." --Jay Leno

"A big issue this year is how many of these presidential candidates are guys that have been divorced -- some of them two or three times. Do you think that hurts the candidate? See, I think it gives them valuable experience. They know how to negotiate with the enemy." --Jay Leno

"Republican candidates are announcing their first quarter fundraising totals so far. Mitt Romney announced he's raised $23 million, Rudy Giuliani said he's raised $15 million, and Congressman Tom Tancredo announced he's raised two children." --Conan O'Brien

"Police in Connecticut arrested a man for speeding who identified himself as Vice President Dick Cheney. They took the guy to the hospital. Obviously, this guy has mental problems. I mean, these days, what sane person would try to pass themselves off as Dick Cheney?" --Jay Leno

"Hillary Clinton is running for president. ... She's set a fundraising record; she's already raised $26 million. That's a lot of money. To put that in perspective, that is more money than President Bush lost in all the years he was a businessman." --Jimmy Kimmel

"Baseball season has officially started. For the second year in a row, President Bush did not throw out the first pitch. You know why? The rumor is he was worried about being booed. That never stopped the Kansas City Royals" --Jay Leno

He's created so many disasters, I'm not sure he knows which is which anymore. He walked into Walter Reed, and he said he wanted to have it ready for next year's Mardi Gras." --Bill Maher

"Actor and former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, the guy from "Law and Order," ... is thinking of running. He's only been married twice. By Republican standards, that would make him the family values candidate." --Jay Leno

"The U.N. Security Council expressed concern over Iran capturing those 15 British soldiers. Concerned? With the U.N. involved, this could escalate from concerned to severely frowned upon." --Jay Leno

Good work on freeing the hostages, Nancy!

Hahaha! .. only kidding .. just thought it made a lovely header.

What is the big deal here -- that Pelosi spoke with Assad or that the Bush Administration won't?

The White House's hissy fit about Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria is just a bunch of hooey. Congress is an independent and coequal branch of our government. Its members can go anywhere they dang well please.

While Bush plays politics Pelosi is out there doing all the hard work .. and if she continues to take steps like this, as we get closer to '08 elections, the loyal Bushies are going to look so isolated and out of touch.

If Bush hasn't stepped up to start a dialogue to ease tensions between the US and Syria .. well, thank goodness she did not go to the Bush School of Diplomacy. She is only doing what was recommended in the bipartisan Iraq Study Group.

Time is running out .. even the Syrians recognize a lame duck when they see one.

It tickles me how frothed up the Righties get about Speaker Pelosi's trip .. running around ranting and accusing her of acting like the Secretary of State.

Many people -- on both sides of the aisle -- think it should be Condi doing this.

And get the media! They've reported on Pelosi's trip -- and White House criticism of it -- without mentioning that a congressional Republican accompanied Pelosi to Syria as part of her Mideast trip delegation.

There's Dick "last throes" Cheney and the Preznit .. all over the air waves with their pathetic whining .. criticizing Pelosi, claiming that her trip was rewarding "bad behavior" ...

Never mind that a Republican-led delegation met with the Syrian President Bashar on April 1 .. or that after returning from the trip, Rep. Robert B. Aderholt (R-AL) was quoted in the following April 4 article disagreeing with White House objections to Pelosi's trip.

From the AP:
"Three Republican congressmen who parted with President Bush by meeting with Syrian leaders said Wednesday it is important to maintain a dialogue with a country the White House says sponsors terrorism.

"This is an area where we would disagree with the administration," said Rep. Robert Aderholt of Haleyville. "It doesn't mean you're weak in your policy or that there's no problems ... We just wanted to let them know that the lines of communication are open and if we can find some common ground on some issues we need to go forward on that."

http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/ledgerenquirer/news/local/17027814.htm

Thank goodness that not all Republicans are Bush-bootlicking dupes who only parrot neo-con talking points.

“President Bush, is the head of state, but he hasn’t encouraged dialogue. That’s an important message to realize: we have tensions, but we have two functioning embassies.” - Rep. Darryl Issa (R - CA)

But this is the comment that gets to the nut of it:
"Dialogue is not a sign of weakness," Pitts said after returning home Wednesday. "It's a sign of strength." - Rep. Joe Pitts (R - PA)

Yep, funny how the White House criticized Speaker Pelosi for taking this trip .. but stayed relatively quiet about a similar trip taken just a few days earlier by those GOP Reps.

Everyone should just relax .. it's probably a good thing that Syria thinks Pelosi's visit is a signal that their current isolation may be melting .. evil devils they may be, but we might need them in this very troubled and complicated world.

Paraphrasing LBJ -- It's better to have them inside the tent pissing out than outside the tent pissing in.

I don't like that all this is probably more about politics than policy -- that it's more about the elections in 2008 than the problems we're facing today in 2007.

And talk about "rewarding bad behavior" -- which is what a hostage swap would certainly be -- looky here...

Even Righties are wondering if there was some kind of background deal linking the release of the 15 British sailors captured by Iran to the release of an Iranian diplomat by US forces in Iraq.

Like this editorial from the very pro-Cheney New York Sun:

Quid Pro Quo...New York Sun Editorial...April 5, 2007
"It's hard to believe it was strictly a coincidence: On Tuesday Iraq and America freed an Iranian "diplomat" they had been holding, and the next day Iran turned around and announced it would release the 15 royal marines it had been holding hostage. Whether there was a connection was the question on everyone's mind yesterday."

Just so Bush can try to salvage his legacy

@ 06:27 AM (15 months, 11 days ago)

This is for Bush, Cheney, McCain, Lieberman, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the Righties who want to keep our soldiers in the middle of this hopeless Iraq civil war mess .. just so Junior can try to salvage his legacy.

The first article gives a taste about what it's like to be a soldier on those mean streets .. about US Navy reservist Michael Christensen, a dedicated, brave and loyal soldier who made it home safely from Iraq, but not without being wounded twice by roadside bombs.

Christensen's job was to escort Iraqi and foreign contractors so they could repair roads and buildings. He was lead gunner on his team’s scout vehicle, perched with a machine gun on top of the truck at the front of the convoy — a dangerous position.

http://www.bellinghamherald.com/255/story/53094.html

[..]"While politicians continue to debate the country’s stability, Christensen said daily life on the streets of Iraq is tense, especially for Americans.

“If you’re going to walk around over there, I’d strongly suggest investing in Kevlar (body armor),” Christensen said. “There are definitely warmer spots of American compassion, but things are still very … touchy.”

Christensen said his team was discouraged from interacting with Iraqi citizens, because it was difficult to tell friend from foe.

“There would be 10- or 11- year-old kids that would give us a ‘thumbs up’ when we drove by them, and then throw grenades under our truck after we passed,” he said.

But Christensen said the worst violence was saved for Iraqi groups that assisted in the American reconstruction of the country, such as the Iraqi Security Forces.

“If there is one group of people that they hate more than us, it’s the Iraqi Army,” he said. “If they catch wind that one of our convoys is working with the Iraqi Army, they’ll fight to the death. You take a few minutes for yourself before you (leave the base) on missions like that.” [..]

And now here's a poor kid with brain damage and Combat PTSD who didn't fare so well:

"DUNBAR, Pa. — Blinded and disabled on the 54th day of the war in Iraq, Sam Ross returned home to a rousing parade that outdid anything this small, depressed Appalachian town had ever seen. “Sam’s parade put Dunbar on the map,” his grandfather said.

That was then.

Now Mr. Ross, 24, faces charges of attempted homicide, assault and arson in the burning of a family trailer in February. Nobody in the trailer was hurt, but Mr. Ross fought the assistant fire chief who reported to the scene, and later threatened a state trooper with his prosthetic leg, which was taken away from him, according to the police.

The police locked up Mr. Ross in the Fayette County prison. In his cell, he tried to hang himself with a sheet. After he was cut down, Mr. Ross was committed to a state psychiatric hospital, where, he said in a recent interview there, he is finally getting — and accepting — the help he needs, having spiraled downward in the years since the welcoming fanfare faded.[..]"

How many more like Sam Ross? How many?

It's the president who plays political games

@ 06:56 AM (15 months, 12 days ago)

I guess it's more important for Bush to play political games than it is to get our commanders on the ground the funds they say they desperately need.

And what is it that's so important that he's willing to risk the safety of our men and women in uniform? To just hold off long enough so he can hand the mess to the next president?

Are we going to let him sacrifice more of our kids so he can "save face"?

Why else would he continually insist on open-ended war, with no benchmarks for progress, no accountability to the public .. and no end in sight?

This is no place for politics, Mr. President .. you have a chance to sign a bill that contains every dollar you asked for .. along with sensible timelines for getting the Iraqi military and police ready to stand up (what the Iraq Study Group recommended) so we can finally bring our soldiers home.

In a time of war, it would be downright irresponsible for the commander-in-chief to veto this legislation while our troops in combat are waiting for the funds.

Give-'em-hell Sen. Harry Reid said it best:
"If the President vetoes this bill he will have delayed funding for troops and kept in place his strategy for failure."

The war is getting worse, not better. The president keeps asking us to wait another six months for things to turn around in Iraq .. then another six months .. but while we're waiting the number of American service men and women killed in Iraq during the last six months -- November 1, 2006 through March 31, 2007 -- was the highest in any six-month stretch of the entire war: 532.

The latest polls show the country is solidly behind pulling out the troops .. also defunding the war.

And the more stubborn Bush becomes, the higher the approval rating goes up for Democrats.

"Prosecutor Posts Go To Bush Insiders"

Hmm .. wonder how many of them were appointed to be US Attorneys in swing states.

And, when you get to thinking about it, you wonder how many USA's who were leaned on a tad doubled their efforts to play along with the administration .. just to keep their jobs.

After they are confirmed by the Senate, I want them left alone to do their jobs .. even if they disappoint the president who installed them .. like Patrick Fitzgerald and the Plame/leak/perjury case.

From the Washington Post .. Sunday, April 1, 2007
"About one-third of the nearly four dozen U.S. attorney's jobs that have changed hands since President Bush began his second term have been filled by the White House and the Justice Department with trusted administration insiders.

The people chosen as chief federal prosecutors on a temporary or permanent basis since early 2005 include 10 senior aides to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, according to an analysis of government records. Several came from the White House or other government agencies. Some lacked experience as prosecutors or had no connection to the districts in which they were sent to work, the records and biographical information show.

....No other administration in contemporary times has had such a clear pattern of filling chief prosecutors' jobs with its own staff members, said experts on U.S. attorney's offices."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/31/AR2007033101158.html?hpid=topnews

Yeah, yeah .. a president has the right to install his buddies into US Atty slots. And if a Democrat is elected in '08, cronies of Sens. Reid, Feinstein, Durbin, et al will select 'friendly' attorneys who would help implement the White House policies of President Edwards or Obama or Clinton.

But the Big Difference will be that those chosen attorneys will have to face a panel of senators from both parties for confirmation. No sneaking them through the back door like this president did.

See, the thing that really irks me is not that the US Atty firings involved political considerations .. it was how the sneaky Bushies had language inserted into Patriot Act legislation (thousands of pages long and a chore for either party to read, AND they snuck it in at the last minute) that allowed Gonzales to bypass the checks and balances of Senate confirmation .. the interim US Attorneys could serve indefinitely.

That way they could get rid of 'non-players' and install 'players' who couldn't be ousted until Bush left office. Every other president has had to have his new USA's approved by the Senate.

I think Congress has just repealed that sneaky little provision .. or getting close.

That should put an end to this White House using the Justice department as another arm of the Republican party .. a Justice department that is one of the foun
