Hands, a poem ..

@ 11:25 AM (26 months, 29 days ago)

My grandfather grew up holding rags,
pounding his fist into the pocket
of a ball glove, gripping a plumb line
for his father who built what anyone
needed. At sixteen, wanting to work on
his own, he lied about his age
and for forty-nine years carried his lunch
to the assembly line where he stood
tightening bolts on air brake after
air brake along the monotonous belt.
I once asked him how he did that all
those years. He looked at me, said,
"I don't understand. It was only
eight hours a day," then closed
his fists. Every night after dinner
and a pilsner, he worked some more.
In the summer, he'd turn the clay,
grow tomatoes, turnips, peas,
and potatoes behind borders
of bluebells and English daisies,
and marigolds to keep away the rabbits.
When the weather turned to frost,
he went to the basement where,
until the seeds came in March,
he made perfect picture frames, each
glistening with layers of sweet shellac.
His hands were never bored. Even
in his last years, arthritis locking every
knuckle, he sat in the kitchen carving
wooden houses you could set on a shelf,
one after another, each one different.

The Swiftboaters are baaaaack ...

@ 07:58 AM (26 months, 29 days ago)

Jerome Corsi, who led the "swiftboating" attacks on Sen. John Kerry during the 2004 presidential election, has a "Where's the Birth Certificate" book coming out in May. We don't have to guess who'll be swiftboated next.

From slate.com: "Donald Trump has now wasted three news cycles to proffer his theories about President Obama's birth certificate. Tim Pawlenty has issued a definitive statement: "I think President Obama was born in the United States." Jerome Corsi, who can append "#1 New York Times best-selling author" to his name thanks to his "swift boat" quickie in 2004, is already promoting Where's the Birth Certificate?[..]"

First of all - What can possibly be in this book that's not already available for free on countless web sites?

Not to mention in huge smelly sacks at the garden center.

Even in a cesspool like politics, the Birthers and the Swiftboaters occupy a level of sliminess all their own.

This is totally preaching to the choir. It won't convert even one vote to the GOP .. the only people who'll buy it are people who wouldn't have voted for Obama anyway.

There are only about 20 percent of the general population that really, really want to believe this .. and about another 20 percent that wish it were true. Hopefully, this Birther crazy will alienate the remaining 60 percent.

I know one thing - if Hillary or the Republicans had found the tiniest discrepancy about Obama's birth, it would have come out BEFORE the election.

That's why nobody in the GOP is calling for an investigation of the Federal Election Commission. They certify candidate eligibility. If the R's are really serious, stop pestering Obama to supply his documents - he already has - and start calling on Issa to investigate the FEC.

Old guard Republicans are in on the scam .. they know it's bogus but think it's to their advantage to participate in the charade .. it keeps attention drawn away from the fact that they aren't creating all the jobs they promised.

Not to worry .. this birther craziness won't make the news after Obama is inaugurated again on Jan. 20, 2013.
